Apple’s third virtual event of the year – the “Hi, Speed,” that happened on October 13th, saw the eagerly awaited 2020 iPhones’ announcement. ‘The iPhone 12 lineup is here with us, and there are four different models.’ The major highlight for Apple was the introduction of 5G connectivity for the iPhone.
Other highlights included a new processor for the phones, new camera features, and various upgrades. The Homepod mini and MagSafe also made their way to the announcement table. However, the expected Apple-silicon Macs, AirPods Studio headphones, and AirTags trackers are yet to be unveiled. Below are the key highlights of the event.
iPhone 12 lineup
The 2020 iPhones come with a new design. We’d say they have recalled the iPhone 4 model design. The iPhone 12 has the standard 6.1-inch OLED screen and a Super Retina XDR display, minimum bezels, and has maintained the aluminum frame and glass at the back. It has the Ceramic Shield said to be the toughest glass is used in iPhones.
Besides the two basic colors, black and white, we have an additional red, blue, and green colors. It has the A14 Bionic chips, the same as the ones in iPad air. The 5G enabled device has dual rear cameras, both 12MP but with different capabilities. It will retail at $799.
The iPhone 12 Mini is the smallest, thinnest, and lightest 5G device. It has a 5.4-inch display. It has the same features as the iPhone 12 but more affordable and lower battery capacity. Its starting price, $699.
The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are the high-end 5G iPhones. They have a 6.1- inch and 6.7-inch display, respectively. They also have a sharp Super Retina XDR OLED screen, the Ceramic Shield glass, flat edges, and rounded corners. They come in four stunning colors, Space Gray, Silver, Gold, and Pacific Blue. They are IP68 rated for water and dust resistant and run on the A14 Bionic processor.
Their rear sports triple cameras with better night mode performance, HDR video recording, and Lidar sensor technology for faster mapping in poor lit areas. The iPhone 12 Pro has a base price of $999 while the Pro max starts at $1099 for the base model.
Apple also announced its spherical smart speaker, the mini version of the HomePod. Apple’s S5 chips power the speaker. The HomePod mini supports Apple Music, iHeartRadio, Podcasts, Pandora, and Amazon Music, but not Spotify. Siri will be your assistant and has a range of functions it can perform on the HomePod Mini.
Its primary competitor is the recently released Audio Nest by Google. It will cost you $99, and you can preorder from November 6th and be available on November 16th, only in white and space gray.
MagSafe chargers and accessories
MagSafe is Apple’s wireless charger for your iPhone. The MagSafe charger supports 25W wireless charging speed. Accessories include iPhone cases and wallets.
Finally, Apple has now joined the 5G race. The new iPhones are expected to bring tough competition in the market. Don’t expect headphones or a power adapter while unboxing any of the iPhone 12s phones. All phones come with the USB-C to lighting cable.
